Take Ivy


The documentation of Japanese street fashion over the past decade or so, Harajuku, Lolita, Gothic Lolita, Ganguro, etc, has become fetishized, exoticized, and glorified. But an older style tribe and seemingly more mundane but no less detail oriented is the Japanese penchant for American Prep and Ivy League style. A recent NYT article shed light on an old Japanese publication from the 70’s called Take Ivy that photographed collegic styles at American ivy league universities for dissemination in Japan, a role reversal of today’s “Fruits” publications and Tokyo fashion blogs. The pictures are incredibly inspiring and I’d imagine there’s a library of these volumes in the archives at Ralph Lauren and J.Crew. More pictures after the jump…
