Marc Jacobs on CNN, 1992

The lethargic British voice of the commentator punctuated with expressions of callous excitement, an eccentric designer opaquely explaining his obscure references, and a parade of models, glamazons really, strutting the catwalk in audacious spectacle. That’s fashion by way of CNN, at least in the early 90’s.

The video is a treasure, showing a fairly thorough glimpse of what would become part of the Marc Jacobs brand DNA, years before Robert Duffy and Bernard Arnault knew what to do with it. The collection’s bizarre theme and taste deficit presages both Jacob’s dismissal from the company and his later greatness as America’s premiere contemporary designer.
