Tony Viramontes

The Face, 1985

One of the defining illustrators of the 80’s, Tony Viramontes (a Los Angeles native) created some of the most iconic looks for Vogue, The Face, Claude Montana, Hanae Mori, Versace, Perry Ellis, Valentino, and Janet Jackson. His work was a foil to the done up and excessive pageantry of the times setting the tone for a harder yet humorous glamor in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  Like many masters of the medium, Viramontes drew from staged sets with models in studio lighting and set in poses. His signature photo illustration technique became one of the most copied techniques in advertising. He passed in 1988 at the young age of 28 but his work continues to seize the imagination and inspire.

there is a feature on Viramonte’s work in the current issue of Arena Homme +
