The first thing that came to mind when I saw the Celine resort collection was 1970’s Kraut Rock and its aspirations of simplicity, abstraction, and a look towards the future. The second was this old collection by Raf Simons. Hesitant to call out any spiritual motivations, but definitely it’s a whole new outlook we have here…

Slightly less than a year ago menswear designers evoked Ray Petri’s Buffalo style for their fall 2009 collections, its oxymoronic hard frivolity striking a cord with the current mood. Arena Homme + published for the same season a tribute to Petri’s world, the issue as a bible of sorts for those that missed the movement when it was in full force. Despite that Grunge and Gangster Rap brought bleak cynicism to the fore in youth culture, the early 90’s managed to sustain and broadcast a voice for unbridled fantasy. Charged with ideals of action, utopia, and mild metaphysical exploration, the undoubtedly futurist prerogative took root in cyberpunk aspirations and techno beats.
